From the data I came to the conclusion, that the netflix show, “13 Reasons Why” did contribute to a spike in interest in suicide search terms. After the show was produced to viewers on March 31, 2017, a sudden interest in suicide and depression searches soon followed.

An explanation for the other random increase in suicide searches is the dates. If you look closely, you will notice that the spike in suicide searches occurs around the holiday season. There have been theories that support the idea of an increase in suicide rate during the holidays, because of the cold and darker days, and people feeling more lonely usually leads to suicidal thoughts and actions.

As hard as people worked on the show, “13 Reasons Why” viewers retaliated negatively. It is truly a shame that a spike in suicide searches followed the release of this show. Hopefully this show also encouraged people who need help to get that help.
