I chose to investigate the connections between people searching “suicide” and the Netflix show, “13 Reasons Why”. I decided upon these topics because “13 Reasons Why” has become a popular show, starring a young high school student that commits a tragic suicide. Furthermore, I was interested to see if there was any correlation between suicide searches, after the show had been produced.
Following this process, I used google trends to evaluate the search trends in those subjects. An article posted by Time, quoted a study “in the 19 days following the release of 13 Reasons Why. All such queries were higher than expected for that period by about 19%, which reflects 900,000 to 1.5 million more searches”. A research team at the University of San Diego California further discovered, that inside of these searches, topics such as “how to kill myself” became more prevalent.
I was intrigued by the idea that this television show, in an attempt to address suicide, might have encouraged high school suicide. Many have made comments saying the show had glorified suicide, and I was curious to know if that was a common emotion.
